2. SOLAR POWER CONDITIONING UNITS(PCUs)

Solar PCUs are typically systems of Higher Capacity power backup that work on the principle of utilizing maximum solar power while charging the battery bank as well as when it is in backup mode.

Solar Inverterv/s PCU

When you use a Solar Inverter, during daytime, battery will be charged through solar power but the Load will be fed through AC Grid Power (NEPA) through bypass mode.Solar energy stored in battery will be utilized when AC Grid Power is unavailable (in Inverter mode).

This way solar energy will be stored in the battery and can be utilized when AC mains gets cutoff. As long as grid power is present solar power is kept stored and not utilized.Solar inverters are economical, efficient and eco-friendly power back up solutions for home and industry.

In case of PCU, solar charging of battery takes priority during solar day.Battery charges through solar until it reaches full charge voltage. After battery is fully charged, the Load is fed via Battery in Inverter mode. Thus Grid Poweris not used in presence of solar power in case of PCU.

  • The charging mode can be selected according to user’s requirement i.e. Economic Charging mode where the solar power is given the priority to charge the battery and utilizes main power only if required, or the battery can be charged in Quick Charging Mode that charges the battery with the combination of both NEPA and solar power simultaneously fed into the battery resulting in fast charging of the batteries.
  • Also if the Solar Power is capable enough to bear the load then it shall disconnect the Grid Power and solar power may be utilized to support the load. This helps in saving the electricity as well as more power backup.
  • The system is well designed to continuously monitor the state of battery voltage, solar power output and the loads.
  • The PCU gives the pure sine wave as the output which is the exact replica of Mains, this feature is suitable for interiors where Grid Power is weak and the renewable energy sources are available.

3. SOLAR CHARGE CONTROLLERS

There are two types of charge controllers available – PWM type and MPPT type.

The PWM controller is in essence a switch that connects a solar array to a battery. The result is that the voltage of the array will be pulled down to near that of the battery.

The MPPT controller is more sophisticated (and more expensive), it will adjust its input voltage to harvest the maximum power from the solar array and then transform this power to supply the varying voltage requirement, of the battery plus load. Thus, it essentially decouples the array and battery voltages so that there can be, for example, a 12-volt battery on one side of the MPPT charge controller and a large number of cells wired in series to produce 36 volts on the other.

Example

A 300 W panel is rated at 24 V. But in reality, it supplies 7.88 A at 38 V (7.88A X 38V = 300W). But the 200Ah battery is designed to take only 24 V. If you don’t use charge controller, the high voltage from solar panel may damage the battery causing it to explode. A charge controller solves this issue:

PWM – It is just a switch with steps down 38V from solar panel to 24 V for battery. So the battery will receive 7.88A * 24 V = 189 W of power. The balance power of 300 W – 189 W = 111 W is wasted. Therefore, although the consumer pays for 300 W, he will get only 189 W. Unfortunately, that’s the reality, however, PWM is cheap on the pockets of consumer.

MPPT – This does not waste power, but is expensive. It is recommended for loads in excess of 2.5 KW. Let us say, the 300 W solar panel provides 38 V at 7.88 A. The MPPT controller will convert this to 24V, 12.5. So now, the battery receives 12.5A X 24 V = 300 W full. No power wastage.

4. SOLAR CONVERTER

Aethon’s Solar Converter cum Solar Charge controller is a unique invention which can be attached to existing non-solar inverters to get a solar inverter system.

If you own a normal Inverter System, then by connecting our Solar Converter you can convert your existing non-solar inverter system into a solar inverter.

Through this Converter unit, the inverter will give priority to solar charging and allows only the solar panel or mains to charge the battery at a time. The switch over between solar and mains is automatic.

Hence, this system saves the cost to the buyer towards replacing his non-solar inverter system with solar inverter system.

5. SOLAR BATTERIES

Aethon offers specially designed batteries for Solar Systems in 100 AH, 150 AH and 200 AH configurations. Our batteries are Sealed, Maintenance Free (SMF), deep-cycle batteries which have been optimized to be able to charge with very little current, and thus take maximum advantage of any available energy and also designed for optimum performance, very long life, high reliability, low self-discharge and quick charging.

Annexure – What are Pure Sine Wave Inverters?

There are three types of inverters available in market whose details are provided

Square Wave Modified Square Wave Pure Sine Wave
Square Wave voltage output can be harmful to electronic equipment, especially equipment with motors. The square wave output has a high pollution in voltage which can cause noise and severe overheating of equipment The most common and general use inverters available are of Modified Square Wave. They are generally available at a more moderate pricing compared to Pure Sine Wave inverters. Modified Square Wave inverters are designed to have somewhat better characteristics than Square Sine Wave units. However, the problems of Square Wave Inverters do persist, though to a lesser degree. These facts are usually not brought out to the customers and these inverters are passed off to unsuspecting customers as Sine Wave Inverters Aethon offers only Pure Sine Wave Output Inverters. These are a must for powering your sensitive and sophisticated equipment. Pure Sine Wave inverters provide electrical power similar to the utility power you receive which is highly reliable and does not produce noise, interference or overheating.
